When decorating the kitchen there are many things that we consider to purchase and that we are excited to have. The one thing that can never be overlooked is the trash can. Unfortunately this is the least exciting thing that we like to have. It does a great job of getting rid of the trash in our home – but after a few minutes it begins to smell and that smell can permeate the entire house.
There are steps that you can take to help contain the smell. The first is to wash it down. Take the garbage can outside to the driveway and use the hose to rinse it off. Pour a gallon of water and three cups of bleach inside of it. Let this sit for an hour. Make sure to stir the bleach every ten minutes.
Using a long brush, scrub the sides of it. When you are satisfied that it is clean you can pour the water out. Before you do though make sure that you use the mixture to wash down the lid. Rinse it out with the hose and allow it to dry in the sun. The sun’s rays are strong enough to kill any bacteria left behind.
Prevent Smells
Now that you have thoroughly cleaned it out you need to do what is necessary to keep the smell from returning. The biggest culprit of a smell can is a bag that leaks. When throwing anything away make sure it is not going to rip the trash bag. Also do not overstuff the bags.
Place a small amount of baking soda in the bottom of the trash can so that it can absorb the odors. A good substitute to this is to simply purchase the odor control trash bags. These will give your can a fresh smell scent that helps to absorb the bad odors.
